Greg Halich
Greg Halich is a cattle farmer in Central Kentucky, where he finishes steers on pasture using biological systems and approaches. He has incorporated bale grazing into this system for over a decade and has found there is no easier way to bring soil biology back to life on degraded farms.
He is also a Forage Systems Extension Economist at the University of KY, where he works with livestock farmers to improve profitability.
Production focus areas are producing grass-finished beef, using biological farming techniques such as bale grazing, and extended season grazing systems that reduce or eliminate the need for commercial fertilizer inputs.
Greg’s Workshop
Silviculture and farm-based forestry
Farm woodlots and forests are often a part of the farm that don’t get much attention. In this session we will take a “forest-walk” to discuss options for forest management (intentional or non-intentional) and understand the long-run consequences of various management options. For those that choose a more hands-on management option we will discuss options to harvest timber, firewood, and other forest products, as well as farm-sized equipment to safely get this done.
